Creating my cartoon

Colour scheme ideas

I made a quick colour mood board to look at what colours I could potentially use in my design.

Character ideas

I then drew out a few cartoon ideas I had in mind.

Development

I decided that I wanted to do my fury monster design so I moved onto making the individual features.

Using illustrator I created a range of eye designs and a mouth.

Next I had to make the fur, so I created my own brushes that looked like fur strand's. I then had to paint each piece of hair onto my cartoon varying from one colour to another.

Final Design

Here is my cartoon design, overall I would say that I am pleased with my final outcome especially with the time limit that we had been given.

Research

Research

I did some research looking at the different colour schemes, features, and for most which animal they represent.

Illustrator & photoshop tutorials

Tutorials

Scarecrow

This was the first basic tutorial, in which I had to take and place the image of the scarecrow and blur the background.

Sunset in a field

Another tutorial which involved putting two images together. Another thing which I learned in this tutorial was enhancing images using levels and curves.

Red sky

Here is another tutorial which involved blending multiple images together, and using a range of levels and blending modes.

Reflection on sunglasses

This was a quick task to get used to the selection tool. Also I got to look at the warp tools which I used to give the image that rounded glasses look.

Blending modes

This tutorial was based on playing around with blending modes, which helped me see the various modes and what they looked like. Also this was the first time I learnt how to make a drop shadow.

Layer masks

This was a quick tutorial to blend three images together using layer masks. The tutorial showed me what a layer mask is and how to use it.

Boarder layer mask

Another quick tutorial on layer masks to blend the 4 images together. This tutorial got me used to using the layer masks, and showed me how to use the gradient tool in layer masks.

Skin typography

Moving onto typography the next tutorial was to add a skin texture onto the type. When doing this tutorial I learnt how to cut type out of a texture by using the selection tool. Also I got shown the burn and dodge tool and how the two tools work, which helped the skin texture look more realistic.

Collage

This collage tutorial involved using a range of techniques in Photoshop, ranging from layer masks to gradients, levels and a variety of blending modes.

Photoshop Exercises

My collage

This is a collage which I created, using a series of layer masks and blending modes.

Dream Typography

This was a task set to make our own typography and I found that I wanted to play around with Photoshop a bit and use a range of techniques in my design. The word I decided to use was 'Dream' because there are so many ideas which can relate to this word. When doing this design I learnt how to make the type embossed, and used the technique I used in the skin tutorial with taking the skin texture and placing it on the text, and added a green pattern to my embossed text.

Bike on a street

This was an collage exercise where I just played around with blending modes, curves and saturations until I was happy with my result.

Orange in an apple

This was a hard but helpful exercise as it required a lot of techniques to get to the final result. New techniques that I learnt while producing this design was using the blend and stamp tool after I had to split the apple to make a gap for the zip. Another is using the brush tool to add shading and shadows to different parts of the image to add detail and make the design look more realistic.

Broccoli collage

This collage exercise was a more open task, which involved selecting certain features and transferring them onto a new document. With this task I learned how to use the different range of selection tools.

Colour blending mode

This task was another more free exercise to do, the exercise shown me how to use the colour blending mode when colouring in an image and make the colour look realistic.

Photoshop Makeup

In this exercise I learnt the different techniques to look like makeup, this included using the colour blending mode, using the brush tool and playing with a range of opacities. Another thing I learned was changing the colour of the models hair and t-shirt by selecting the wanted area, and using curves or colour balance to get the colour you want.

Illustrator Tutorials

For this tutorial I had to created the cartoon monster using a various number of shapes and tools. From this tutorial I have learnt about the path tools and merging paths together.

For this tutorial I wasn't given any instructions except from the colour co-ordinates so I felt like this was a good tutorial for exploring and trying out new skills. When creating this design I learnt more about gradients and where to position them.
